We all know that space-time is expanding. Vertiginously fast indeed. And indeed, it’s not only expanding, but the expansion is acelerating. This of course means that every point in space is getting farther and further from each other at faster and faster speeds every new moment. Astronomers using the Hubble telescope, recently measured the Hubble constant to be 70 (km/sec)/Mpc (with an uncertainty of 10%). Which basically means that in each square Megaparsec of space, space-time is getting expanded at a rate of 70 km per second in every direction. You can read more about the measurement here. There are some suspects for the cause and lots of theories about the results, but I’m thinking today about dark matter and dark energy, two celebrities of today’s cosmology, and what would things be without it. Yes, I’m thinking about how things would be without something we don’t quite know its there. Well, at least not exactly. I personally believe dark matter will be unveiled in details somehow soon. Anyway, lets talk about expansion/compression.

Here’s an interesting fact: Brazil has the largest city (in area, territory, square meters, et all) in the world. It’s Altamira in the state of Pará. The city “shores” itself alongside the Xingu river and, mind you, it has more territory than quite a few countries. It’s larger than Greece, the Netherlands, Austria, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and a couple hundred more. Altamira has even more land area than Portugal (yeah, land of the guys who came here 500 years ago and since then claim to have… discovered us. (giggles)

This evening, while killing some neurons at YouTube, I found this very interesting interview with John Williams.
No, not the one who composed all those movies soundtracks. That one is also a genius, but this John Williams I’m referring to is the australian born, english raised, guitar virtuose, who is probably one of the most significant guitar players of all times.
He’s interviewed here by Shinichi Fukuda, the japanese guitar player. Very worth watching.
Here goes the three parts of the interview:

Here’s a simple proposal: let’s make wednesday a day-off, mini-holiday, a sleep till back hurt thing. Why not? What we should do is work monday and tuesday, take the wednesday off, work the remaining thursday and friday (some – most perhaps? – may still work a full or part saturday), then land wasted on the weekend.

Guess its a good day as any to start a blog (again). Slight rain falling outside, lots of birds screaming their tongues all about, and mind you, its a holiday. Of course today that only means waking late for most of the people here in Brazil, being as is a tuesday, and (cof) most of us did work yesterday.
But its an interesting holliday. Homage to Joaquim José da Silva Xavier who, 217 years ago, on 1792, April, 21, was hanged in Rio de Janeiro for being a darn rebel. Yes, gotta love a brave rebel.
